maria berntsen

maria berntsen is a designer of many facets, which is clearly testified by the range and variety of her most popular designs. they include the "wallpaper" magazine rack for rosendahl, a number of kitchen utensils and for georg jensen the original and charming vacuum jug known as "quack" and a number of cutlery and jewelry items


berntsen was originally educated as a bachelor of commerce from the copenhagen school of business. she has also studied architecture both in denmark (at the art academy school of architecture) and in france (at l'ecole d'architecture de bordeaux). in addition, she has learnt glass blowing as well as photography, and she is also a trained goldsmith


to maria, a sense of humor, experimentation and sensuality are crucial concerns in the creative process. the three dimensional element is important, which is evident from her creations, which are often based on experimental models, and most importantly: intuition. her work is invested with an immediate sensibility towards an object's form, and she tries to let intuition take over when working on a design, since she is convinced that our experience of form is intuitive and emotional. "i think people have a need to be surrounded by things that leave room for feelings", she has said. she feels it is crucial that the user of a given item is able to sense the human being behind the product's design


in addition to the"quack" jug and various jewelry pieces, maria berntsen's designs for georg jensen include a set of centenary stainless steel cutlery. this was carried out with a great sense of the relation between volume and suppleness and of the exchange of energy that takes place between the design product and its user


since 1992, maria has had her own drawing office, where she has designed furniture, lamps, applied art, jewelry and kitchen utensils for both danish and foreign companies. also, she has been working periodically as a teacher at the danish school of design (danmarks designskole). her work has been exhibited in paris, new york and london
