kim naver

the eminent weaver and designer kim naver was born karen margrethe naver in 1940 in copenhagen, where she grew up as an only child and was nicknamed kim. early on, she developed an interest in the arts and culture. at the age of 12 she suffered a blow as her mother succumbed to long-term cancer


in 1959, kim went to paris to study art history at the École de louvre, and having returned to denmark the following year, she attended the school of home furnishing. in 1962 she became an apprentice of the outstanding weaver lis ahlmann, and she soon showed extraordinary promise in this area. she had her debut exhibition in 1963 at the prestigious charlottenborg spring exhibition. now married and having given birth to her first child, she began a new apprenticeship, in the workshop of another prominent weaver and designer, vibeke klint. works created here by naver as test pieces were later bought and put into production by the textile company cotil


around 1970 kim naver began a search for new creative approaches. she had a desire to combine the free form which she knew from her design work, with the more strict techniques of weaving. this led to new explorations of materials and color, helped along by a trip to the east in the mid-70s, where she was inspired by the special eastern, more delicate approach to textiles and patterns. the resulting work firmly established her as a major innovative force within the danish field of one-off art works


apart from a number of outstanding one-off creations, she has carried out several industrial design assignments. her artistically persistent work has showed through in skilful architectural manifestations, such as tapestry, stage curtains, marble floors and glass ornamentation. she has been a prolific designer of furniture textiles for the companies cotil, paustian and c. danel, and of domestic textiles for the kolding damask weavers as well as for georg jensen, for whom she has also designed silver jewelry. also, she has been a member of a great number of judging committees and has participated in the administration of the government's arts funds


as it was said about kim naver as she received the distinguished v. engelhardt grant in 1998, she belongs naturally to the danish weavers' "list of queens", together with artists like those she has been taught by, ahlmann and klint. the engelhardt grant has been awarded since 1933 to a number of graphic and industrial designers and architects that possess special, artistic designing gifts


apart from this grant, naver has received a countless number of other prices and awards through the years, such as the distinguished thorvald bindesboll medal. in 1998, she was given the government arts fund's lifetime grant. she is represented at various museums throughout denmark, and of course her work can also be seen at the various places for which she has carried out commissioned work. they include the danish national bank, where she created five large weavings in 1979 to fit into arne jacobsen's architecture, denmark's radio, the ministry of foreign affairs, airlines, the ministry of culture and many others
