a discontinued design from georg jensen in copenhagen, denmark

henning koppel: the master of form

henning koppel (1918-1981) is perhaps the most outstanding innovator of danish silver art

he has been described as a major exponent of the development of danish design since the mid-1950's, particularly due to his impressive and exemplary hollowware creations for georg jensen

henning koppel was educated as a sculptor at the academy of fine arts in copenhagen, as well as in paris from 1936-38. one of his main works of sculpture is a portrait statue of the danish actor poul reumert posing as lieutenant von buddinge

however, it was with a jubilant parade of silver art for the georg jensen silversmiths, where he worked from 1945, that he became the famous creator of ingenious and graceful designs that we know today

koppel grew up in a culturally engaged family. his father was a journalist, translator of french literature and staff member at the danish newspaper politiken for 45 years, of which the last ten were spent in the position of chief editor. his mother was a charles dickens enthusiast, who took her two sons on a journey of formation to italy

during ww2, henning koppel fled to sweden with his wife, and when they returned it was with two daughters in tow. shortly after the war, koppel - who had been devoted to art and drawing since childhood - began working for the georg jensen silversmiths

henning idiom and sense of shape and contour was distinguished and highly original, which is clearly evident from both the silver works of his early career and his later creations in glass, porcelain and many other materials

the designs that koppel introduced at the georg jensen silver smithy were almost revolutionary in their difference from anything previously experienced. initially, they were met with a mixture of enthusiasm and denunciation, or just plain , but what everybody sensed was that something new was indeed happening

in his own personal language and with a fittingly bubbly temperament, henning koppel reacted against functionalism in its most tired and sterile form. he never used decorations, but expressed himself in concise lines

an example is his famous fish serving dish. extremely supple and slender, strained to breaking point, it was almost impossible to see where the lid and the bottom met. only a thin line connected the opening at each end, and it was necessary to search thoroughly in order to find the joining. a truly equilibrist piece of craftsmanship

his background as a sculptor showed through in his powerful lines and shapes, purged of any superfluous ornamentation. at the same time, the actual function of the object was supported in a discrete yet convincing way. these qualities you will also find in the works henning koppel later designed in other materials: steel, glass, textiles, wood, plastic and porcelain - designs which were later produced in the shape of furniture, clocks, cutlery, table ware and more. and to complete the picture of this versatile artist, it should be mentioned that koppel also designed stamps, painted in watercolors and wrote books

in spite of the challenging and imaginative nature of many of koppel's designs, none of his works has ever lacked his unique sense of natural elegance and function
